As you all know the Lord of the Rings Return of the King opens today, and I can' t wait to see it. It's already got a buzz as being a front-runner for Best Picture. Today I came across this interesting interview with John Rhys-Davies, who plays Gimli the Dwarf. He talks about what the the Lord of the Rings means to him, how it is relevant to us today:
I think that Tolkien says that some generations will be challenged. And if they do not rise to meet that challenge, they will lose their civilization. That does have a real resonance with me.
He goes on to talk about how our generation is now being challenged, and how his father said back in the 1950's that the next war would be one between the western world and Islam. He talks about how we need to stand up to our generation's challenge now.. very interesting read.
