Kanye West Rips Bush During NBC Telethon

I was watching a taped version of NBC's "A Concert for Hurricane Relief" this morning, when I saw something that made me sick to my stomach, and so angry that I could have spit.

Rapper Kanye West went out on the air during the benefit saying about how he wanted to help as much as possible, how he wanted to talk to his manager and give as much as possible, and then veered off into a rant about how George Bush doesn't care about black people and how relief efforts are set up to help as slow as possible. He also went off about how it was black people who were hurt by this, never once even stopping to consider that there were thousands of white people hurt in this as well. Mike Myers, who was presenting at the time with West just looked at him with a look on his face like "what are you saying, you idiot?". NBC quickly cut away to Chris Tucker, who scrambled for words in the obviously unscripted moment.

Kanye West in this moment showed how selfish and stupid he really is, to take this bully pulpit to blast politicians, and further separate people, instead of trying to help people. This benefit should have been for the people in need, not to be used as a political soapbox, or to show how caring he was. I think Kanye probably hurt more people with his comments, than he realizes. I for one will NEVER buy one of his albums now, and I encourage others to engage in their right to free speech by showing Kanye how disappointed we are in him.

From the billboard.com:
It began, fittingly enough, with jazz from New Orleans natives Harry Connick Jr. and Wynton Marsalis. But "A Concert for Hurricane Relief," a heartfelt and dignified benefit aired on NBC and other networks last night (Sept. 2), took an unexpected turn thanks to the outspoken rapper Kanye West.

Appearing two-thirds through the program, he claimed "George Bush doesn't care about black people" and said America is set up "to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off as slow as possible."
