BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraqi forces captured a key aide to Jordanian-born terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who leads an insurgency affiliated with Osama bin Laden (news - web sites)'s al-Qaida network, the government said Friday.

The man, identified as Talib Mikhlif Arsan Walman al-Dulaymi, also known as Abu Qutaybah, was captured during a Feb. 20 raid in Anah, about 160 miles northwest of Baghdad, a government announcement said.

Terri Schiavo :: ProLifeBlogs: "Abuse Allegations to be Investigated

Washington Post, Feb. 23 -- The administration of Gov. Jeb Bush, already forcefully rebuked by the Florida Supreme Court for trying to override judicial orders and block the removal of a brain-damaged woman's feeding tubes, launched itself back into the case Wednesday by asking for a delay to investigate abuse allegations.

The surprise request by Florida's Department of Children and Families to intervene in the case of Terri Schiavo stirred an already emotional atmosphere. A woman broke with courtroom decorum and called out 'Amen' when an attorney for Schiavo's parents, who are trying to stop her husband from removing the feeding tubes, announced in Pinellas County Circuit Court that the department has asked for a delay."

What If This Was Our Daughter or Sister or Wife?

This post goes into more detail about Terri Schiavo's condition. The more that I read, the angrier I get. Read the whole thing..

Anchor Rising: "This posting notes:

Dr. William Hammesfahr, a world renowned neurologist wrote a complete report…in September, 2002, revealing that medical tests conducted after her collapse did not show evidence of a heart attack. In the emergency room, a possible diagnosis of heart attack was briefly entertained but then dismissed after blood chemistries and serial EKG’s did not show evidence of a heart attack.

I would strongly encourage you to read the entirety of Dr. Hammesfahr's report. Among other things, it will allow you to contrast the depth of his examination analysis with the shallow analyses of a doctor who has twice 'examined' Terri and then declared her to be persistent vegetative state. Here are some impressions and observational excerpts from Dr. Hammesfahr's examination of Terri:

Impressions: The patient is not in coma. She is alert and responsive to her environment. She responds to specific people best. She tries to please others by doing activities for which she gets verbal praise. She responds negatively to poor tone of voice. She responds to music. She differentiates sounds from voices. She differentiates specific people's voices from others. She differentiates music from stray sound. She attempts to verbalize. She has voluntary control over multiple extremities. She can swallow. She can feel pain...

Communication: She can communicate. She needs a Speech Therapist, Speech Pathologist, and a communications expert to evaluate how to best communicate with her and to allow her to communicate and for others to communicate with her…

ENT[Ear, Nose, Throat]: The patient can clearly swallow, and is able to swallow approximately 2 liters of water per day (the daily amount of saliva generated). Water is one of the most difficult things for people to swallow. It is unlikely that she currently needs the feeding tube…

Spinal Exam: The patient's exam from a spinal perspective is abnormal. The degree of limitation of range of motion, and of spasms in her neck, is consistent with a neck injury.

All of these observations explain why her parents are seeking further medical tests of Terri before any action to starve her to death is taken. Terri’s husband and the judge have been blocking these testing requests.

From the Orlando Sentinal: Schiavo's Parents Lose Appeal

The parents of severely brain-damaged Terri Schiavo lost another crucial court appeal today - the day before a court order that could lead to the removal of her life-sustaining feeding tube.

The 2nd District Court of Appeal in Lakeland denied Bob and Mary Schindler's motion to delay issuing an order it plans to release at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. That order could allow Terri's husband, Michael, to seek removal of the feeding tube.

The Schindlers, however, are expected to ask Pinellas Circuit Judge George W. Greer for a stay to allow them to appeal again to higher courts. If Greer issues that stay, the tube will stay in place.

Terri Schiavo - Get the facts straight!!

What I am so concerned about in the case of Terri Schiavo is that an innocent life is being lost, and people can't see her "husband" for what he is. A scheming, greedy killer. Its also horrible because people are throwing all sorts of things out there stating that she is comatose, that she is a vegetable, she is on life support, etc, but she is not!

Here is what her father says,

"Contrary to anything you may have heard, Terri is NOT brain dead; Terri is NOT in a coma; she is NOT in a "persistent vegetative state;" nor is she on ANY life-support system.

Terri laughs, Terri cries, she moves, and she makes child-like attempts at speech with her mother and me. Sometimes she will say "Mom" or "Dad" or "yeah" when we ask her a question. When I kiss her hello or goodbye, she looks at me and "puckers up" her lips.

This may not seem like much to you, but it means everything to Terri's mother and me. It tells us she is still here, she still knows us, and with therapy and time she can have some level of recovery."

The only "life support" that Terri is receiving is that she is being fed.

And doesn't anyone think it is odd that her so called husband who wants her dead is already living with another woman and has children with her, but refuses to divorce Terri so that her parents can care for her? There is also some evidence showing that he may have tried strangling her the night she had her brain injury. He also stands to gain quite a bit of money if Terri dies.. What about those things do people not understand?

I for one will be praying that Terri is saved this horrible starvation death (starvation, by the way, is not a fun way to go).

New England Republican:

"Walid Jumblatt, patriarch of the Lebanese Druze Muslim community:

'It's strange for me to say it, but this process of change has started because of the American invasion of Iraq,' explains Jumblatt. 'I was cynical about Iraq. But when I saw the Iraqi people voting three weeks ago, 8 million of them, it was the start of a new Arab world.' Jumblatt says this spark of democratic revolt is spreading. 'The Syrian people, the Egyptian people, all say that something is changing. The Berlin Wall has fallen. We can see it.'

It isn't strange to those of us who have believed in the power of freedom all along."

Moss to be traded to Oakland, agent confirms

I'm not sure if we're getting a very good deal on this one.. I have a sick feeling in my stomach..

Star Tribune

"The Vikings and Oakland Raiders have agreed to a trade that will send Vikings receiver Randy Moss to the Raiders in exchange for the seventh overall pick in this year's draft, linebacker Napoleon Harris and a low-round draft pick this year, a person with knowledge of the situation said Wednesday.

'It's sort of a bittersweet moment for Randy,' said his agent, Dante DiTrapano. 'He had seven years in Minnesota, and he loved being a Viking. But, at the same time, this gives him a better chance to win a Super Bowl. The Oakland Raiders have vowed to use Randy like he has been used the past seven years, and that's throw the ball deep.'

NFL trades can't become official until March 2. Because of that, the Vikings aren't able to comment on Moss' status.

'We've had discussions with the Raiders, but we have nothing to say about it,' said Rob Brzezinski, Vikings vice president of football operations. 'That's all we can say.'

Moss has been rumored to be on the trading block since the end of a injury-plagued and controversial-filled 2004 season. Brzezinski said the Vikings did not shop Moss, and that the Raiders contacted them recently to initiate trade talks."

ScrappleFace: Terri Schiavo Spared by 'Endangered' Designation

Here's a satire from Scrappleface - it would be funny if it weren't so true - the state of respect for life in this country is so backwards:

ScrappleFace : "Terri Schiavo Spared by 'Endangered' Designation
by Scott Ott

(2005-02-19) -- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has, at least temporarily, saved the life of Terri Schindler-Schiavo, the Florida woman whose former husband, Michael, had planned to disconnect her feeding tube on Tuesday.

The 11th-hour reprieve came in response to a plea from the Schindler family to have Terri classified as a silver rice rat (Oryzomys argentatus), considered an endangered species by the state of Florida and the USFWS.

'It was a longshot,' said activist Randall Terry, who has recently come to the aid of the Schindler family in their efforts to save Terri from death by starvation. 'But if we can prove that Terri is a silver rice rat, her life is protected by the state and the federal government.'

Mr. Terry contacted the USFWS after learning that it is illegal to kill dozens of creatures in Florida, including the leatherback seaturtle, the marsh rabbit, the saltmarsh vole, the shortnose sturgeon, the Choctawhatchee beach mouse and the oval pigtoe (a mollusk).

'If we can apply to get Terri classified as a different endangered species each month, we can give her several more years of life,' Mr. Terry said. 'I know it sounds dehumanizing, but under our laws a rat has more of a right to life than this woman.'"

"Jimmy Carter Attack Sub Armed with Nerf Missiles
by Scott Ott

(2005-02-16) -- The U.S. Navy on Saturday will commission its newest nuclear-powered attack submarine, the Jimmy Carter, with many new features, including multiple-warhead Nerf missiles.

President Carter, who brought peace to the middle east, vigorously defended America's right to give away the Panama Canal and, in 1994, convinced North Korea to abandon talking about its nuclear weapons, said he's honored to have his name on 'one of the most powerful peacemaking devices on earth.'

Jimmy Carter is the first of the American Seahare-class subs, featuring a high-tech sonar system which alerts enemy forces to its presence and a safety device on the Nerf missiles which allows firing only after an enemy missile impact.

'This new generation of nuclear submarines is designed to use trust in our enemies as our first line of defense,' said an unnamed Navy spokesman.

President Carter has invited leaders from North Korea and Iran to the commissioning ceremony, during which former First Lady Rosalyn Carter, in a time-honored Navy tradition, will give the first order to 'man our ship, bring her to life then park her over there by the dock!'"

A Message From Terri Schiavo's Father

Posted by Peter

Common Sense Runs Wild

By now you have probably heard about a young woman who is threatened with starvation in Florida.

That young woman is my daughter, Terri. In 1990, through circumstances which are shrouded in mystery (and may involve a criminal act by Terri's estranged husband), my daughter was left severely brain-damaged.

But before I go any further, I must put an end to the lies and misinformation that are circulating around the country through the media concerning my daughter's condition.

Contrary to anything you may have heard, Terri is NOT brain dead; Terri is NOT in a coma; she is NOT in a "persistent vegetative state;" nor is she on ANY life-support system.

It tells us she is still here, she still knows us, and with therapy and time she can have some level of recovery.

I know that there are some hard hearted people who believe that due to my daughters condition, she is better off dead. Words cannot describe the pain and anger such sentiments cause us. This is our daughter, our little girl, and even in her disabled condition, she still has the right to life and the right to be loved and cared for by her family.

Why, you may ask, is Terry in danger of death by starvation?

It is a long and outrageous story, but I'll give it to you as briefly as I can.

After the "incident" that left Terry in this condition, her husband Michael Schiavo sued various members of the medical community for money, saying that they did not treat or diagnose her properly at an early stage, and that he needed this money to provide for Terri's therapy and rehabilitation and care.

After lengthy court battles, he finally won upwards of $1.7 million under the guise of caring for our daughter, and then to our horror, he immediately began spending the money on himself and his Playboy lifestyle.

Terri's estranged husband Michael Schiavo has been living with another woman for years, and has two children by her. He is determined to see Terri dead. Why? We believe it's because he gets to keep whatever money is left... and he may have even darker motives than that.

To add insult to all of this injury toward my daughter, Michael Schiavo is still her "legal husband" and therefore is her "guardian." And since they are not legally divorced, he controls whatever health care she will and will not get. We are not even allowed to know if she is getting aspirin.

In 1993 my family initiated litigation against Michael Schiavo solely for the purpose of acquiring medical, physical and neurological assistance for our daughter Terri. The litigation escalated in 1998 when Michael Schiavo petitioned the court to stop Terri from receiving food and water, thereby starving her to death.

In filing this legal action, he retained the services of a high profile euthanasia attorney and the financial backing of powerful euthanasia organizations. He also used Terri's medical rehabilitation money to underwrite much of the legal expenses associated with his effort to starve our daughter to death.

We know that he has spent nearly $500,000 of Terri's money in attorney's fees for just one attorney trying to obtain a court order to have Terri starved to death. The very money that was supposed to be used for Terri's rehabilitation is being used to have her killed.

We very quickly discovered it was impossible for us to compete with the abundance of financial and legal resources the pro-death organizations were providing Micheal Schiavo in their effort to kill Terri. They are pouring time and effort into her starvation because they want to use this case to further the agenda of legalized euthanasia.

My wife and I are not wealthy people. Throughout those years, we did not have any large organizations trying to help rescue our daughter. Consequently, we had to rely on the generosity of attorneys who were willing to offer their legal expertise at no cost or at reduced fees.

The bottom line is that we are in the final weeks or months of our struggle to rescue our daughter from an untimely death by starvation. Death by starvation is very slow, and extremely painful. As you must know, it is against the law to deliberately starve an animal to death. There are members of the Florida court who would not treat a dog the way they plan to treat my daughter.

At this point we must pull out all the stops in our fight to rescue our daughter.

As parents, we are desperate to save our daughter's life. As people who love life, we are determined to deprive the euthanasia advocates of successfully legalizing this form of homicide. We believe that their efforts to kill Terri are designed to set a precedent for the future eradication of defenseless disabled human beings. I was alive when Americans fought the Nazis; I do not want my daughter to meet the same fate of thousands of disabled people in Nazi Germany, and I do not want our country to go down that same dark path.

Friend, though we have never met, I'm asking you for your help. We desperately need your financial assistance to help our family continue the battle to keep our daughter from being starved to death. There are so many expenses in a case like this it is mind-boggling and overwhelming. Please click below to make a contribution now:

Our adversaries believe that by our family's financial attrition and difficulties, they will attain their objective of killing our daughter. Presently, Terri's starvation may only be a few weeks away, unless we find the financial resources to prevent this atrocity from becoming a reality.

I implore you to please help us. We are writing to you, because we believe you have a heart for justice and mercy. I'm asking you to put yourself in my shoes, and then do whatever you can to help our family. Whether it is $10 or $1000, we are desperate for the resources to fight this battle for our daughter's life at this critical juncture.

Please do whatever you can, and forward this e-mail to any friends or family that you have who you think might be interested in saving Terri's life.

I thank you for your time, your concern, and I solicit your prayers for Terri and our entire family. These have been very trying times for us all.

Fowler agrees to buy Vikings

Saying that "The eagle has landed," Red McCombs this afternoon began the end of his tenure as owner of the Minnesota Vikings.

At a news conference at Winter Park in Eden Prairie McCombs introduced Reggie Fowler, the likely new owner of the Vikings. McCombs praised Fowler as a businessman who has the means to buy the team.

For his part, Fowler, large in stature, short on speech, affirmed McComb's statement.

"We would not be here today if we did not have the ability to make the transaction,'' Fowler said.

Both Fowler and McCombs refused to discuss the price for the team, but others sources have estimated it at $625 million.

Yahoo! News - CNN News Executive Eason Jordan Quits

NEW YORK - CNN chief news executive Eason Jordan quit Friday amidst a furor over remarks he made in Switzerland last month about journalists killed by the U.S. military in Iraq.

Jordan said he was quitting to avoid CNN being "unfairly tarnished" by the controversy.

During a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum (news - web sites) last month, Jordan said he believed that several journalists who were killed by coalition forces in Iraq had been targeted.

He quickly backed off the remarks, explaining that he meant to distinguish between journalists killed because they were in the wrong place where a bomb fell, for example, and those killed because they were shot at by American forces who mistook them for the enemy.

"I never meant to imply U.S. forces acted with ill intent when U.S. forces accidentally killed journalists, and I apologize to anyone who thought I said or believed otherwise," Jordan said in a memo to fellow staff members at CNN.

But the damage had been done, compounded by the fact that no transcript of his actual remarks has turned up. There was an online petition calling on CNN to find a transcript, and fire Jordan if he said the military had intentionally killed journalists.

Franken will not run for Senate -- yet

Power Line: Dayton to Retire: "Dayton to Retire
It is being reported that within the next hour or two, Minnesota's Mark Dayton will announce that he is not seeking re-election to the Senate. I'd classify this as a mild surprise; I assume it's the result of pressure from fellow Democrats who fear that Dayton is too weak to hold his seat. His retirement will open the door for a stronger candidate. Obvious possibilities include Vance Opperman and Mike Ciresi. Both have the virtue of being rich, although neither has held office. Another possibility is Attorney General Mike Hatch, although I think he prefers to run for Governor. It's hard to see any of the Democratic members of Minnesota's congressional delegation as serious contenders.
Conventional wisdom is that Dayton has been the Democratic incumbent most likely to be unseated. I think that's right. While the Democrats undoubtedly can field a better candidate, it isn't obvious to me that they can find a candidate sufficiently better than Dayton to cancel out the loss of incumbency."

The Diplomad: The Risk-Taker: George W. Bush: The Risk-Taker: George W. Bush

An excellent State of the Union message, superbly delivered. Ronald Reagan couldn't have done it any better.

It's quite an experience sitting in front of a large screen TV in a foreign land surrounded by foreigners -- many of them not friendlies -- listening to the President of United States speak. W did us proud. Even the most ardent critics in the audience could find only nits to pick, e.g. "He says he's going to reform immigration, but why does it take so long to get a visa?" "He says he wants freedom for Iran, but why didn't he mention freedom for [fill in the blank]."

This is a man who is not afraid to draft and push the world's agenda. He had nothing politically to gain by liberating Iraq. He could have followed the tried-and-true tepid measures of the past: more UN resolutions, more "consultations" with the EU and Muslim countries, a bombing raid here and there, etc. Instead he went right for the root of the problem: the existence of Saddam's regime and the climate of fear and oppression that ruled Iraq. On elections in Iraq he could have stalled and postponed and begged for help: instead he put his faith in the US military's ability to deliver on security and in the people of Iraq's desire for freedom. On Afghanistan, he could have limited himself to some ineffectual missile strikes, some UN resolutions, an appeal for the arrest and trial of the Al Qaeda thugs. No. He gambled his Presidency on removing the Taliban, crushing Al Qaeda, and moving Afghanistan towards democracy. On the Palestinian question, he could have followed the failed policies of the past: schmooze with Arafat, give him money, pretend that he didn't control the "radical" elements, consult with the EU, keep sending special envoys hither and yon, etc. No. Bush cut off Arafat, refused to deal with the Palestinian authority until they held free elections, and now we have a chance, more than ever before, for a solution.

Last November 7 we wrote,

Let's be blunt. You don't want to be on the wrong side of an American President who has shown he will literally "pull the trigger"; a President with the solid backing of the Senate, the House, and the American people; and, to top it off, a President who has nothing to lose politically and has made clear that he will spend his political capital. You don't see this combination often -- and when you do, you take notice.

We stand by those words and note that the world has taken notice. They can call him names, and rant and rave all they want. Those of us conducting the foreign policy of the USA in the "hard countries," far removed from the salons of Paris, know when we have a winner: George W. Bush.
